It’s also my first time at the Provincial Capital of Pangasinan – the Municipality of Lingayen. It’s famous for the Lingayen Landing during World War II but I forgot to visit the site.
Lingayen Municipal Hall
From Bolinao I dropped off at the Lingayen Public Market. Good thing Lingayen follows the old concept of Spanish towns – that the market, municipal hall and church are adjacent to each other and all are located in the Poblacion (town proper) area.
Near the Municipal Hall is the Casa Real, which is being restored. Then next to it is the Pangasinan Provincial Jail. There were some churches nearby. After visiting the Epiphany of Our Lord Co-Cathedral Parish (painted gray which is different from the yellowish color you could find on older pictures), I visited the Provincial Capitol grounds.
There’s a monument of Governor Aguedo F. Agbayani in front of the Provincial Capitol, which is classical Roman architecture in design. During my visit, there’s an open air market place in front of the capitol for farm tractors and equipment.
Here’s a quick information about Lingayen from the Provincial Website of Pangasinan:
Lingayen is dubbed “the heart, the soul, and the face” of the Province of Pangasinan.
The municipality got its name from a certain corpulent tamarind tree that grew at the present town plaza. The tree was exceptionally big, tall and spreading that the surrounding trees were just dwarfs in comparison. Passersby developed the habit of looking back and back again at this corpulent tree until it would vanish from their view. When they arrived home and were asked what way they took in return, they would simply say through Lingayen meaning “looking back”. Since then up to the present time, the town bears its name as “LINGAYEN.”
Lingayen is the home of the most delectable bagoong. The theory of some makers is that the salinity of the air is a factor why fish fermenting is very ideal in Lingayen.
Today, Lingayen is considered one of the most beautiful place and most peaceful municipality of Pangasinan that made it worthy to be loved, looked back, patronized, visited and revisited.
