Tuguegarao City, Cagayan

Tuguegarao City is huge. Establishments are spread in wide area. My Tuguegarao-based Aunt lives in Balzain area and traveling to other parts of Tuguegarao City takes time, mostly by tricycle. My US-based Aunt and I stayed at Casa Angela for 2 nights. It’s a few blocks away from Tuguegarao Cathedral (also known as Saint Peter Metropolitan Cathedral).

Tuguegarao City is the capital of Cagayan Province. The provincial capitol is located quite far from the town center.

There are huge malls across the city, like Robinson’s Place and SM Center Tuguegarao, and you can find a lot of establishments found in Manila. I feel like I’m in Manila but it’s wider and gives you a lot of space.

After visiting Tuguegarao Cathedral, we also visited the Cagayan Museum and toured around downtown Tuguegarao. It’s also a starting point if you’re traveling to other parts of Cagayan like Piat, Iguig, Peñablanca and even to Tabuk, Kalinga. Too bad I’m just an alalay during this trip and doesn’t have the privilege to travel by jeep on my own.

Balete, Aklan

After returning to Kalibo from New Washington, I saw a signage of a jeepney trip to Balete, Aklan. I always travel by jeep as much as possible because it’s more economical. So I rode a jeep and dropped off at the municipal hall compound.

They have a Quick Response Center, which serves also a waiting shed because it’s along the main highway. There’s a nice church dedicated to St Raphael the Archangel near the Balete Town Hall. There’s also a monument dedicated to Jose Rizal.

Balete is a nice small town. There isn’t much business establishments nearby and the market is nowhere to be found. This is a new town. I investigated Google Maps and found a museum nearby called Basura Garden. It’s a museum for works of arts made from recycle materials. I’ll made a separate blog post about it.

That concludes my 3 Days Trip to Mindor0 and Aklan. After visiting Balete, Aklan I returned to Kalibo and waited for my flight back to Manila.

The Vibrant Town of Kalibo, Aklan

I just took the van from Caticlan to Kalibo for P100. It was almost a 2-hour ride. I had lunch at Jollibee Kalibo and then take a tour of the nearby Kalibo Church, Museum and plaza. The museum entrance fee is only P50 and the display were beautiful, specially the paintings. I rented a tricycle to take me to the Capitol Building (Kalibo is the capital of Aklan), City Hall, Kalibo Freedom Park, and Rizal Monument.

The Municipality of Kalibo is huge. Whenever I visit a new town or city, I always go straight to the heart of it – the main Roman Catholic church. In Kalibo it is the St John the Baptist Cathedral Parish. It has a single belltower with seemingly Doric-inspired columns in the façade. Unfortunately, it’s closed when I visited so I wasn’t able to take a picture of the interior.

Next, I visited the Aklan Museum which is housed in a building built in 1882. I’ll create a separate blog post for the Aklan Museum because it contains a huge collection. I next visited the Kalibo Pastrana Park where a monument to Jose Rizal and other heroes are located. Nearby is the Kalibo Public Library and Police Station.

I rode a tricycle and asked to be taken to the Aklan Freedom Shrine, the Kalibo Municipal Hall and the Aklan Provincial Capitol. Kalibo is the capital of the Province of Aklan. I took my lunch at Jollibee Kalibo.

Kalibo is also the capital of Aklan Province. The design of the Aklan Provincial Capitol is in the Greek style with Corinthian columns.
